Details of the day-to-day life on the project:
You spend a week on the boat with the professor Jessica Alessi. She is a wonderful person, very welcoming, willing to take us in her car and drop us somewhere if we needed. Take us to the port everyday. You stay all day on the boat, following fishing ships and waiting for dolphins (most of the time). I didn't see any whale when I was there in July. You take pictures of the dorsal fins and add them to the catalogue later on that day. Depending on the weather, you could be in the office end of afternoon and morning on the boat or the opposite. In the office, you analyse the fins and try to figure out who is who. Jessica gave us classes about how to ID ceteceans, how they communicate and how to use GIS. Everyday we do a GIS map of our boat trip with the gps of the boat.

An amazing project with amazing staff
I work as a travel agent, bringing volunteers to DAKTARI and other projects around the world. After helping a lot of volunteers fulfill their dreams of coming to South Africa, I managed to arrange 2 weeks to spend at the project. What a wonderful time I had starting with the staff who are so friendly and polite, the animals being taken care of as if they were family and the amazing food that was prepared catering to each of the volunteers individual needs. I can only say that if you are looking for an unique and quality experience involving a well thought out educational program and the preservation of native animal species, this is the one for you.
