Coral Reef Restoration

Project name:

Blue Corner Marine Research

Project purpose:

The Nusa Islands Restoration Project is an attempt to reverse the degradation of reef areas along the northern coastline of Nusa Lembongan & Penida Islands, Bali. These reef areas have been monitored by our team for the past 10 years. A need for reef restoration was highlighted as a priority in the area, and Blue Corner implemented a plan to restore these impacted areas.

During the training program participants learn about restoration ecology & coral biology, as well as take an active role in coral transplantation and monitoring.

  • data collection/analysis

  • habitat restoration/management

Details of the day-to-day life on the project:

This coral reef restoration program is conducted as a workshop in which you take part in Blue Corner Marine Research's ongoing coral restoration project. During this week you will learn about the science of restoration ecology and how it applies to marine environments. You will also learn several techniques in coral propogation, monitor nursery corals and transplant corals onto modular reef structures. Taught by our in-house marine biologist and certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner.

Certification includes: PADI Coral Restoration Diver.

The 6-day workshop price is USD $560 (IDR 7.900.000) All books and survey materials, certification, and use of dive gear are included in the course fees for the conservation modules. We will be doing at least 10 dives working at the restoration site, so divers need to have good buoyancy skills and be comfortable in currents.

Throughout your time here on the island you are responsible for your own food and accommodation.

The main Blue Corner Dive shop where we will be doing our training is located on Jungutbatu Beach on Nusa Lembongan Island, Bali. This beach is the heart of budget accommodation on the island where most independant travellers stay. Within 5 minute walk of the dive centre are several homestays and guesthouses which do nightly/weekly/or monthly rates on rooms. Blue Corner Dive has a dormitory for students ($15/bed/night for AC dorm or $10 for fan bed). This can be a nice social option for either the first few nights while you get to know the island, or even for the entire time of your course. Note that you will still be responsible for your own meals, but we have a delicious beach-front bar and restaurant that sells delicious food and there are plenty of off-site options that suit all budgets.

The Coral Restoration Week is part of a 5 week Scientific Diving Training Program:
- Scientific Diver Fundamentals Week
- Marine Biology & Coral Reef Ecology Week
- Reef Health Monitoring Week
- Coral Reef Restoration Week
- Marine Megafauna Week

Discounts for enrolling in multiple weeks.

An amazing project with amazing staff

average rating is 5 out of 5

I work as a travel agent, bringing volunteers to DAKTARI and other projects around the world. After helping a lot of volunteers fulfill their dreams of coming to South Africa, I managed to arrange 2 weeks to spend at the project. What a wonderful time I had starting with the staff who are so friendly and polite, the animals being taken care of as if they were family and the amazing food that was prepared catering to each of the volunteers individual needs. I can only say that if you are looking for an unique and quality experience involving a well thought out educational program and the preservation of native animal species, this is the one for you.
