Details of the day-to-day life on the project:

This project costs $592 weekly for the first month, with subsequent weeks costing $303. Volunteers staying for 9-12 weeks pay $265 a week.

Work at the sanctuary involves caring for the lions and other big cats, monitoring their progress and behaviour, helping with visitor education and refreshments, administration and maintenance work. Examples of tasks that you may be able to help with are:

  • helping out with the bi-weekly sanctuary feeding

  • observing the behaviour of the lions and the progress of any new arrivals

  • helping with any medical treatments required

  • building new structures for enclosures and helping with maintenance work

  • marketing activity, including brochure distribution to local towns and the surrounding area

  • guiding school children as part of their education program

Please remember that all tasks are demand-driven, and there are no guarantees regarding what things might arise whilst you are away. It is important to be flexible and open minded. It’s a great opportunity for someone who has a keen interest in big cats, enjoys being part of a team and is prepared to get involved in all aspects of conservation work.

An amazing project with amazing staff

average rating is 5 out of 5

I work as a travel agent, bringing volunteers to DAKTARI and other projects around the world. After helping a lot of volunteers fulfill their dreams of coming to South Africa, I managed to arrange 2 weeks to spend at the project. What a wonderful time I had starting with the staff who are so friendly and polite, the animals being taken care of as if they were family and the amazing food that was prepared catering to each of the volunteers individual needs. I can only say that if you are looking for an unique and quality experience involving a well thought out educational program and the preservation of native animal species, this is the one for you.
