Tobacco Caye Marine Station

Project purpose:

Contribute to ongoing local research in the South Water Caye Marine Reserve in Belize to determine ecosystem health.

Providing the opportunity to gain hands on experience on the Belize Barrier Reef and participate in our 5 research projects including monitoring coral bleaching, reef cleaning and ocean plastic, lion fish culling, assessing seagrass health and monitor mangroves.

Dormitory style accommodation up to 4 people sharing

When does the project run?

June and July

Facilities:

accommodation included, food included, electricity, refillable drinking water, cold shower, hot shower, western toilet, wifi, boat transfer to and from the island, welcome cocktail from Kirks Bar, Tobacco Caye Marine Station t shirt, All boat excursions, 2 night snorkels, use of classroom, resources and surveying equipment, snorkel gear including mask, snorkel and fins. $1400 USD for the 11 day programme. Now includes pick up and drop off from the Belize International Airport. Adhering to Belize\'s COVID protocols and the accommodation and tour operator are Belize COVID Gold Standard Certified.

How long can I stay?

11 days to a maximum of 7 weeks

Requirements:

  • At least 18 years old

  • Experience studying marine biology, conservation, environmental studies or related field is preferable but not essential

  • Confident swimmer

Details of the day-to-day life on the project:

Tobacco Caye is a 4 acre island situated on the Belize Barrier Reef. It is surrounded by three ecosystems (coral reef, seagrass and mangroves) contributing to a thriving environment. During this internship you will get the opportunity to gain transferable skills such as data collection, analysis and monitoring, all whilst contributing to our local conservation projects in the South Water Caye Marine Reserve in Belize.
